WEEK 5
Media Effects 1: Individual Effects
In this week's class, we got to watch a movie called The Truman Show and observe the effects of media to an individual and society.
Discuss one or a few of the scenes in "The Truman's Show" that captivates you, explain the role of media in that particular scene and what your opinion regarding the issues being portrayed in the movie.
There is one part in the movie that I find interesting which is when Christof is being interviewed and he says something about how we, the society, accepts the reality we're living in without questioning it and that is the reason why Truman haven't found out the truth (yet). This goes to show that the society are media slaves who accepts whatever reality that is given from the media and choose to remain oblivious. This also shows how powerful the media is in deceiving us. Though, in the end, when Truman finally realized and picked up the pieces and finally found out about the truth behind his reality and how everything was fake and his life being a lie, that is when he showed to us that we can be more powerful than media just by being curious, cautious and doing research to know what really is going on with a situation. Other than that, there are a few scenes in the movie where it shows direct product placement and to me, I find it quite interesting. Those scenes showed the media role in advertising. There is this one scene where Meryl, Truman's wife, is talking with Truman in the kitchen and while doing that she also finds a time to look directly in front which is at the camera and holds up a product while saying some lines that sounds like an advertisement. Although it looks comedic to me, I sense a seriousness in the scene where the same thing happens but this time Truman sorts of really realized it and he starts feeling something is off.
How is the movie affect you personally?
The movie made me feel more conscious to my surrounding. Just like how it is in the movie, it feels like I'm constantly being watched and it made more controlling of my actions, afraid if someone is actually watching me and judging me on whatever it is I'm doing at that moment. Apart from that, it gave me an idea how, in a way, everyone around me including myself is an actor. All of us are playing our parts in this world and in each interaction I could not tell if it is genuine or fake.
