WEEK 4

Media Representation & Cultural Stereotypes

Can you think of an example of a stereotypical image in media that has caused harm? What about an example where no harm has been caused?

Stereotypical image in media that causes harm are the portrayal of people of colour which can be seen as an aggressive, unkind person and cannot love or at least doesn't show affection well. Basically, the bad guy. It can be seen in media platforms such as the big screen movies, television broadcasts and newspapers or magazines.

As for stereotypical image that causes no harm, clothing or the way a person dress in a certain way describes his/her personality or character. For example, if someone wears big glasses, neat hairstyle, clean clothes, all well-dressed, with addition of braces and maybe freckles, they're considered a nerd. Though some people aren't comfortable with these stereotyping labels just on how they dress, it doesn't really cause any issues that could harm someone mentally or physically.

What's the difference between these two examples?

The difference are that society are more judgemental on something a person can't change than something that they can. You can't change your features like skin colour and hair (debatable, but applies for most people); but you can change how you dress.
