WEEK 2

This week's lecture is about Media and Society: Human Communication and Media. I've covered topics such as Perspective on Media & Culture, Basic Characteristics of Media, and Understanding Human Behaviour.

On the first topic, which is Perspective on Media and Culture, I learned that Media Studies is a field of study that deals with content, form, history, and effects. Other than that, Cultural Studies is a field of research and teaching that investigates the way in which “culture” creates and transforms individual experiences, everyday life, social relations and power.

There are six Basic Characteristics of Media given from the lecture which are:
  • The creation of new textual experiences
  • The arrival of new ways of representing the world
  • The development of new relationships between subject (both users and consumers) and media technologies
  • The creation of new experiences of the relationship between embodiment, identity and community
  • New conception of the biological body's relationship to technology and media
  • The development of new patterns of organisation and production
Here are some types of communication mediums:

In Understanding Human Behaviour, I learned that it refers to the full range of physical and emotional behaviours that humans involve in biologically, socially, intellectually and are influenced by culture, attitudes, emotions, values, ethics, authority, empathy, persuasion, coercion and/or genetics.

Besides that, I was shown more information and pictures of communication mediums which are very interesting and informative.

The questions given on this week's lecture is:

In your opinion, what media discovery or invention has made the greatest impact on society today?
In my opinion, the invention of the computer and Internet has made a huge impact on today's society.

How and why?
This is because we surf the Internet using the computer and this applies in both past and present (now) day. With the advantage of the Internet, everyone and anyone can search up informations easily. Even connecting with people, no matter the distance, is easy. On today's modern society, we now have applications such as Facebook and Skype to communicate with each other anywhere and anytime. Also, the computer has upgraded amazingly throughout the years and now we have laptops which are portable comparing to the big, bulky computers we use to have in the past. In conclusion, it truly is a remarkable invention and I hope that our society keeps on striving in more creative innovations and inventions for a much better future.
